Maps are charming and useful to surprise everybody, young to adults.
Who did not dream in front of a map and wondered around a globe? Maps and literature have since ages had a privileged link each other.
Looking at Milan’s historical maps, which tells about a specific historical period and its evolution, we started wondering like children.
These maps are marks, giving evidence of the progressive urban construction, but also objects theirselves: they are historical books and history, novels in which we’d love to swallow.
The Leonardo Da Vinci’s map shows Milan in 1498 and his vision of the city: it brings us into the artist’s imaginary and the productive historical period at the service of the duke Ludovico Sforza.
Many important characters born in Milan could be source of inspiration. Three mains emblematic figures captured our attention during the investigation phase, looking for possible connections between the image of the city and his actual identity, coming out from Milan’s history among the celebrated characters that could be the symbol of culture, knowledge, a multidisciplinary approach and spirituality.
They are: Leonardo Da Vinci, in the Renaissance period; the mathematician, philosophe and theologian Maria Gaetana Agnesi, in the Enlightenment period; the writer Stendhal at the beginning of the troubled century of Napoleon’s conquers, who has been considering Milan “the most beautiful place on Earth”.
Three characters supporting universal and evergreen values; examples and inspiring figures of yesterday, which can symbolize the construction of the future always keeping in mind the roots and the history of Milan. Thus, just after the description of the investigation’s phase and the creative process, we invite you to follow and enter into the scenario where the spatial solutions will continue the story.Our work is a manifest of our “imaginary” Milan of the future.
It is not the final result of a process but a starting point. The future “Scali” will be the result of a collective work in which all the agents involved will continuously change and re-shape the city.
